Mancini Makes A Great Purchase in Ever Banega.
This is the kind of signing that tells me you are serious about winning a league title, because Ever Banega is a very serious player. Even at this recent Copa America, he was one of Argentina's best players and he's been an integral part to the success of Sevilla. By Mancini managing to get him, it changes the whole dynamic of his Inter team.
The issue I had with Inter is as solid as they were, they lacked creativity and guile in their play. There was no playmaker or a guy who controlled the status of the game. Everything just happened too much as a unit without there being a leader in midfield. There wasn't someone who could take control of the ball, put his foot on it and try and tkae in the landscape of the match.
By Banega now coming into the midfield, this gives Inter Milan that personality and defintion they were badly missing last season, especially in the second part. Now they have someone who they can get onto the ball and who has the ability to define the pace of the game. No one else in Inter Milan has that ability, most certainly not the ex-convict Felipe Melo.
Whilst Banega is not exactly playmaker in the sense of Iniesta or David Silva, there is far more imagination to his midfield game than anyone Mancini has. I believe the reason Mancini went for him was to add more life to the center of his team that already has that physicality and strength, but is lacking in a bit of silk.
This kind of signing shows Mancini is serious about competing with Juventus for that title. They got off to a great start last season and I actually picked them to win it when Juventus were struggling but they faded away. No longer were they able to eek out those single goal victories, and once they went down, they could never get themselves back in the game. One of the main reasons for that was their lack of a creative player they could rely on to get them out of those difficult matches they either drew or lost. There's only so much Icardi can do, the dude needs service and he wasn't getting it from the kind of players Mancini had in midfield.
For Banega, I think this is a really good transfer to have. With Sevilla, he was never going to win the league. Europa League, sure, but with Barcelona and Real Madrid, winning La Liga is impossible. However, coming into Inter Milan, even though Juventus have a powerful dominance, the chances with him in the team of winning the Scudetto are far greater. HH
