I'm still pissed off that yet another big team took their rival's best player and thus ended any form of competition in the league.
Napoli with Higuain, and in a fantasy world, Milik, would have made for an amazing title battle with Juventus. You could see things going either way, because of the firepower that both teams would have possessed.
Alas, this is modern football, and of course Napoli's star striker opted to join Juventus and their replacement gets a long-term injury.
But let's deal with the reality of Higuain now being a Juventus player and already paying back the huge fee that the Turin club forked out for him. He's not only been hitting in those goals, but has been providing them when most needed.
What makes a striker for me, is not scoring during a rout, or hitting a penalty when the game is won. It's the match tight at 1-1, or 0-0 and coming up to get the goal that wins the game. That is the true mark of a striker.
Against Roma, the game was tight, and although Juventus were more in control, it could have easily teetered out into a draw. Then Higuain did what he was bought for and took it upon himself to produce some individual quality to score a great solo goal.
I don't know who the guy is that shows up for Argentina, but it isn't the same player. The dude that operates in Serie A is easily in the top three or four strikers in the world. And as I complained previously of there not being many pure traditional number 9's, we are now at a time where those kinds of players are slowly making a return.
Juventus and Allegri must know that the Serie A is all but won now. At seven points adrift with the likes of Roma and AC Milan chasing them, they should comfortable seal it before the end of the season.
It's all about the Champions League now.
I've put down Juventus as one of the potential winners for the competition and many have disagreed. They see the losses of Vidal and Pogba as weakening Juventus. While that may be true, they got in Dani Alves to improve the scope of when they attack and with Higuain in the team, they most definitely are in the conversation and if they can be on their game tactically, I don't see why Juventus can't beat anytime they face.
There are many ingredients needed for winning a Champions League. Great defence, an amazing
number 10, a superb strike-partnership...luck. But if you have a solid team that is robust and tactically astute and you dab a ruthless striker on top of that, then you have the makings of a cup-winning team.
It's been a long time since Juventus have had a striker as clinical as Higuain. Mandzukic is merely a target-man, nothing more. Tevez came to Juventus when he was older and wasn't as direct or quick to the ball as his compatriot. Gonzalo is a whole different beast, that gives Juventus a real tenacious threat to bring fear to defenders.
Higuain may have not done it for Argentina, but with Juve having one eye on securing their sixth Scudetto in a row, and another on European glory; their Argentine hitman will have to play an important role for them to get both trophies.
